For promoting your site, submit your site in directories, place your banner on relevant high quality sites & do forum posting. All these methods are free for promoting your site. While for paid promotion you can use PPC.

forum posting/directories/SEO/word of mouth. I haven't tried business cards but people I've talked to have had good results. There is a really good article I read recently but I can't find it at the moment...i'll post it soon.
