What role does Asynchronous JavaScript play in the AJAX methodology>? How does AJAX minimize the traffic between the server and client?

What are the similarities and differences between AJAX and Java applet? Can anyone tell me the similarities and differences between AJAX and Java applet? What are their architectures. Can you give a simple example application in each architecture? Thanks a lot.
